No flash, it was probably a hundred feet away. Just a fortuitous column of sunlight at the perfect angle. Thanks for the comment!

I love this shot because it shows the heron in a setting in which I've never seen it - over white-capped waves. I'm thinking you used a flash that bounced off the bird and illuminated just it, and not the water. Wonderful, unique contrast between subject and background!
